FEARSOME 5

Reverend Redbeard

Deep within Maine’s bogs and marshes, where frogs croak and dragonflies skim the water’s surface, lurks a reptilian nightmare whispered about by old-time lumberjacks. Unlike the harmless amphibians that populate the wetlands, this beast has no interest in minding its own business. It is said to mercilessly ambush unsuspecting outdoorsmen, leaving no trace of its victims behind.

At first glance, the Dungavenhooter bears a striking resemblance to an American alligator. Its muscular, scaly body is supported by short, sturdy legs, and its long, powerful tail sweeps through the undergrowth. Its scales, murky green with deep brown undertones are rumored to be nearly impenetrable, with some accounts claiming they can deflect arrows or even bullets.

But what truly sets this creature apart and makes it far more fearsome than a mere reptile—is what it doesn’t have. Unlike its alligator cousins, the Dungavenhooter has no mouth at all. Instead, it possesses two massive nostrils, disproportionately large compared to the rest of its head. Staring into them is said to be like peering into an endless void, a sight that sends shivers down the spine of even the most hardened woodsmen.
